To back up the files, the data in the backup system is mirrored at two locations - in the computer centre's machine room and at the university hospital. LTO tape cartridges in a tape robot from Quantum are used as storage media. Tapes still have a much higher long-term stability and significantly lower read and write error rates compared to hard drives and SSDs.

Software
The software we use is the IBM Spectrum Protect system (formerly TSM, Tivoli Storage Manager), which can be found in the software catalogue (external link, opens in a new window). the basic strategy of TSM is the progressive incremental forever backup procedure. This allows a space-saving storage method.
Retention periods
Basically the following applies:
- It is backed up once a day at night
- A maximum of all versions from the last 30 days are stored, but no more than 14 versions
- If a file is deleted, a maximum of 14 versions (for Groupwise 2) are kept for a maximum of 60 days
