DNS (Domain Name Service) is a globally standardised, hierarchical system that is used to resolve names.
This makes it possible to access the IP address of the server using names such as www.uni-regensburg.de in order to be able to communicate with this server, as communication works via the server's IP address.

The university's name servers have a central database that is completely populated from the central network database. The central network database contains all computers, printers, smartphones, etc. that have been registered for use in the university's data network. All of these registered devices can be identified with the name
[geraetename].uni-regensburg.de (e.g. rrznm9.uni-regensburg.de)
and are therefore located in the so-called zone or domain uni-regensburg.de.
In addition to this name, all devices automatically receive two further alternative names, so-called CNAMES, which are located in the zones / domains uni-r.de and ur.de, e.g. rrznm9.uni-r.de and rrznm9.ur.de.
