Chair of International and Monetary Economics

The buzzword "globalisation" describes the growing importance of the international dimension of economic activity after WW II - and “deglobalisation” a counter-movement that started in the early 2010s. Germany trades around half of its value added on international markets for goods and services. However, international migration on the labour and capital markets is also becoming increasingly important. International trade theory attempts to analyse the causes and consequences of these phenomena and derive instructions for economic policy. The recent resurgence in many countries of a tendency towards increased national decoupling emphasises the socio-political relevance of these topics. The Chair's teaching programme covers this area at both Bachelor's and Master's level.

An important policy area - especially in times of macroeconomic crises - is monetary policy. Here, both fundamental institutional decisions, e.g. for the independence of central banks from democratically legitimised bodies or for the expansion of the euro currency area, as well as the concrete use of monetary policy instruments must be analysed. Courses on these topics are also offered in both the Bachelor's and Master's programmes.

The Chair also offers seminars on the two thematic focal points for Bachelor's and Master's students as well as courses on macroeconomics in phase I of the Bachelor's programme.
